Here are a few photos of the finished quilt. My photog daughter instructed me to not be boring. This was my first time making a “brick” quilt like this and I’m happy with the way it turned out, but also found out that it takes a lot longer to make this than the I-spy quilts.

I have made several name banners, so I’ve got that technique down pretty well.

I started with the banner in the middle and added the bricks to each side then built out from the middle, laying out each row individually, trying to get the right “look” and spreading the colors around.

Making the letters is getting easier the more I do it. Its a several step process that I won’t detail now, but they are cute, eh? I already made curtains for the baby’s room out of the Mickey Mouse sheets, so used the left overs for the background. I hope he enjoys this quilt for many years to come.

I start the process by cutting 5-inch strips

I cut the strips into 5-inch squares and sort them by color groups

I lay them out in an 8x10 order, then make piles from each row, starting at the far end and working toward the camera.

You can see the piles of blocks sorted by color

Do you think I may have enough fabric? And this is just the tip of the ice berg.

These are bundled and ready to be sewn into rows and then sew the rows together to create…..

a quilt top, to which I will add 3 and 1/2 inch borders, sandwich, quilt and bind.
The Cheney quilt:

I didn’t get a picture of the strips before they were cut apart, but I started with 2 and 3/4 inch strips that I sewed together from selvege to selvege, then cut into 7 and 1/4 inch (approx) squares

I arranged the blocks and stacked them in the correct order to creat the zig-zag design. I must confess that I messed up on one row two times, so that one row took me an hour to attach to the other rows instead of a few minutes. Live and learn!

Here the two inner side borders have been added…

Next the end borders….

the second side borders added….

and the end second borders.

Here’s the completed top, read to sandwich, quilt and bind, the binding with be the red fabric.
I started the process Sunday evening, the 15th and finished the top Monday afternoon. Sandwiched it Tuesday afternoon at the church where I teach an ESL class. I pushed several table together to create a space large enough to stretch out the backing. I’ve quilted a few zig-zags, but I have until the end of March, so I’m doing some other projects in between. Kind of taxing physically to control the quilt in my “Big Brother” sewing machine.

Here are the steps I take in sandwiching a quilt. First step to lay the back fabric down, stretch it and tape it to keep it tight….

Then I roll the batting out and cut it off…

Next I lay the quilt top on top of the batting….

Then pin the layers together, quilt them and add the binding.

This is the finished boys quilt which I dropped off today for a review for Homespun Oasis.

Same steps for the girl quilt. stretch and tape

pin

look at the cute 3-d mouse!

I use my “Big Brother” quilting sewing machine, which only sews straight stitches, but can do 1500 stitches a minute if I put the peddle to the metal, but not with the walking foot on!

Trimming the extra batting and fabric

another cute detail, with a sequin tiara.

And the finished girl quilt, which will be given away to some lucky reader of Homespun Oasis. Check it out over the next few weeks for your chance to win.

A double thick hoodie scarf for one of the staff at Jane Addams. I wore a black and white one and she asked if I sold them. Of course, so she ordered a black and red one for her daughter.

One of Anamarie’s friends at school ordered these pillows. How sweet. A friend of mine did the embroidery and then I made the pillows. I wonder how long is forever???

One of the two monster cakes we made for Nancy. This one was chocolate with fresh strawberry filling, it’s twin was a yellow one with strawberry and banana filling. Yum
